Renegade Goblin

Goblins and Mutations access just works, so the Renegade Goblin has a surprising amount of options considering its limited availability. For 40k you’re getting exactly what you’d expect stat-wise from a Goblin, but with the aforementioned Mutations access and Animosity (something every except the Lineman and Big Guys get on the Chaos Renegades Team), to all of their team-mates. Unlike the Thrower, the latter doesn’t matter all that much as you won’t be doing much throwing anyway, but it might prevent the odd hand-off from happening.

It is a shame you only get the one Goblin, there’s so many options available here that sticking to just one is quite tricky. Not only that they are the weakest member of your team, with ST2, AV8+ and Stunty, so expect them to be off the pitch as much as they’re on it.

Build List:

Renegade Goblin Base Stats:

Qty Cost MA ST AG PA AV Skills Primary Secondary
0-1 40k 6 2 3+ 4+ 8+ Animosity (all team-mates), Dodge, Right Stuff, Stunty AM GP

Randomised Skills:

Goblins are usually a good candidate for Random skills as they’re cheap and both Agility and Mutations are the better categories to spin into. However, you’re only getting the one Renegade Goblin in this team which means if you want a set build, it’s probably worth avoiding. That being said, just front-loading a bunch of cheap skills into a player isn’t the worst idea.

Stunty Runner | Renegade Goblin Build

Primaries: Two Heads, Extra Arms, Big Hand, Sprint, Sure Feet
Secondaries:  Block
Characteristics: MV, AG

If you keep them protected, the Renegade Goblin can make an excellent runner. The combination of Agility and Mutations Skills can easily make a nimble little bugger that will go through tackle zones like they don’t exist and also provide a good old-fashioned Throw Team Mate Target!

AG3+ is perfect for Mutations as it gets the most benefit out of them, so Two Heads + Stunty means you’ll always be Dodging on a 2+ no matter what then Big Hand + Extra Arms do the same for picking up the ball. Seeing as you’ll probably have all 3 Big Guys leading the charge through the enemy defences, even if they don’t remove many players and just create the space, once you’re 6 squares away there’s not a lot your opponent can do to stop you other than wish they’d taken more Diving Tackle and pray to Nuffle the 1s appear on your dice.

If you add Sprint and Sure Feet into the equation, then that’s 9 squares of Touchdown Range and while it is a ton of dice potentially (and you should always try to limit that, even on 2+’s), the option is at least there and your opponents will need to factor it in.

Block of course is the go-to secondary for ball-carrying goblins, meaning your opponent will need Wrestle and Tackle to get you down with some reliability, although hopefully with your 3 massive bodgyards they won’t be getting too close.

This makes for a decent TTM option as well, especially with Sure Feet and Sprint added to the mix, even better if you save up for a MV buff. You could also try early on for an AG increase, which has the added benefit on not needing Extra Arms or Two Heads, but it’s much harder to acquire and you’re probably better off going for the skills anyway, unless in your first game you score a bunch and get an MVP on this player.

Renegade Fouler | Renegade Goblin Build

Primaries: Sneaky Git, Side Step, Two Heads
Secondaries: Dirty Player
Characteristics: MV

Sneaky Git is a great skill these days, even after its adjustment, so easy access to it is a nice benefit for the Goblin. That being said, the Human Linemen are only 10k more and far more numerous, so you are probably better off using one of those for this kind of build, where you want the cheapest option available with minimal skills so you’re not giving away too much value to a red card and you have replacements available.

Even so, the Agility access and Stunty make them better for it individually. In-built Dodge + Two Heads means you can get to downed players much easier and Side Step can put you in a good position either to escape follow-up hits or get into better positions. Dirty Player obviously is a good choice too but hard to get unless you feed them a few TDs or get lucky on your MVP rolls.

If you do go for this, I’d probably max out at 3 skills at most, otherwise, you’re giving up too much for when the ref gets off his phone and actually pays attention.

Dauntless Sacker | Renegade Goblin Build

Primaries: Horns, Two Heads, Jump Up, Sure Feet, Sprint
Secondaries: Wrestle, Dauntless
Characteristics: ST, AG, MV

Horns and Duantless is a fun combo, and when partnered with a player that can cage dive on a 3+ naturally, it’s even better! Renegades are not the fastest team around, averaging at MV6 with only the Skaven being higher at MV7 but he doesn’t have Stunty or Dodge built in. So if you find yourself broken through or Elves have pulled a fast one, then you’re going to need a backline Sacker who can take down those pesky ball carriers.

This player might benefit a little from a random secondary first, as there are some good candidates in there for the Goblin as a whole and quite a few this build in particular could use. Your best bets however are Wrestle and Dauntless. The former should be obvious as it’ll drag down anyone even if they have Block. Then Dauntless + Horns means, unless they’re covered in Guard you can cage dive and get a 2-die block should you succeed the Dauntless roll. Two Heads then makes those cage dives a 2+ instead of 3+ and Jump Up means you can have another go should you fall over or Wrestle the carrier down.

The biggest issue is MV6, so Sure Feet and Sprint are good takes here as well, or alternatively, an MV buff would work nicely too.

There are plenty of options available to the Renegade Goblin thanks to its very good Primary Access, however, it’s a little stunted (pun intended) by Coaches being limited to just one player. That said, for it’s cost it’s definitely worth taking and I think it would be good as both a sacker or runner, perhaps better than the Human Thrower in that regard.

That’s it for the Renegade Goblin build! Check out our guides for the Renegade Human Lineman, Renegade Human Thrower, Renegade Orc, Renegade Dark Elf, Renegade Skaven, Renegade Troll, Renegade Ogre, Renegade Minotaur and Renegade Rat Ogre.

Vampire Thrower

Probably the closest in terms of the old vanilla Vampire player, is the Vampire Thrower. For 110k, you get the classical statline of Strength 4 and AG2+ along with a very, very nice PA2+ and Pass for good measure. The Vampire Thrower very much does what it says on the...
