Python Warrior Throwers

Python Warrior Throwers fill an odd spot in the new Amazon team. For 10k more than the old version, they’ve gained On the Ball and Safe Pass, which is an interesting combination to say the least and in terms of value for the number of skills they have, 80k is pretty darn good! The issue now is, well Amazon’s no longer have a player with Catch to start and it’s not like Amazon’s were known for their passing plays to begin with. It feels like GW wanted this player to be an “out of turn” mover with OTB, but then Safe Pass doesn’t really play into that. She’s also stuck with PA3+ (but the Human thrower is 2+?!), so your passing isn’t great outside of Quick Passes, much the same as BB2 of course but with no Catch skills on the team, your Quick Pass sequence has gone from a 74.1% chance down to 59.3% chance, albeit without the use of a Team ReRoll.

The Amazon Thrower just feels a little out of place now, but for 80k she’s certainly not a waste of your gold, just not necessarily a priority when you make your team. They’re still your only way to get any Passing SKills on the team and considering you’re AG3+ across the board, the option is there plus Python Warrior Throwers were usually built as Ball Carriers anyway.

Build List:

Randomised Skills:

I feel like you need to really specialise this player to get some worth out of them. You could randomise the Passing skills to try and get some cheap passing bonuses if you like and if you use them as your Carrier, they should be getting some SPP from Touchdowns now and then. You could probably get some use out of most of the Skills, but landing on Leader, Accurate or maybe even Running Pass would be good.

Most of the generals are decent too, but then they turn into too much of a generalist for my liking and you have plenty of Linewomen for that!

Ball Carrier | Python Warrior Throwers

Primaries: Block, Sure Hands, Fend, Accurate, Leader, Nerves of Steel
Secondaries: Side Step, Sure Feet, Safe Pair of Hands
Characteristics: ST/AG/MV

The basic Amazon Ball Carrier! Block is a must, giving you that lovely Blodge to make you pretty darn hard to knock down, followed by Sure Hands to make those pickups relatively easy, although you’re still only AG3+ so keep some Linewomen nearby for safety. Following on, Fend is amazing on this piece, I’ve just finished 40 games with Amazons and my Fend Thrower has been MVP most of my games as she rarely has to Dodge anywhere, giving her much more freedom to reposition or escape a threat.

After that, you can look to get some passing skills just to make her a bit better at it. Accurate is an easy pick here, making your Quick Passes 2+ and your Short Passes 3+. Leader gives you an extra ReRoll, useful as she’ll usually survive most of the game and with the rules allowing more than one per turn. Nerves of Steel is always a win in my book, mean you can move the ball should you get bogged down by some Tackle/Diving Tackle/Arm Bar.

If you’re flush with SPP, Side Step rocks and turns her into a faux-blitzer on Defence, whilst also giving you access to the side of the pitch on Offence. Sure Feet gives you a little bit more range, which is nice for MV6.

Most of the Characteristics are helpful here, but AG would be the best I think. S4 is great of course, but I think being able to escape on a 2+ and making tackle less of an issue is awesome. I’d skip PA on this build, as this is a Ball Carrier first!

A Proper Thrower | Python Warrior Throwers

Primaries: Block, Sure Hands, Accurate, Nerves of Steel, Running Pass, Cannoneer
Secondaries:
Characteristics: PA

It’s quite hard to build a proper Thrower with the new rules, mostly due to Strong Arm only working on Throw Team Mates and Accurate being restricted to Quick and Short Passes only. Seeing as the Amazon Thrower already has Pass & Safe Pass, once you get the three main skills (Block, Sure Hands, Accurate), it’s going to be mostly about making your Passes even safer. Nerves of Steel, as mentioned before means you won’t need to worry about tackle zones, then you could look at Running Pass to provide an assist piece once you’ve made the pass itself. Cannoneer isn’t great, but +1 to Long Bombs is fun and fits in with the build.

There’s something to be said about attempting to get PA2+ early on. It’s going to take a while and I’d recommend getting Block first, otherwise, they might not even survive long enough. Once you get it, you’re Short Passes are happening on a 2+ once paired with Accurate and Long Passes aren’t bad at 3+. You could go for PA1+ if you’re feeling up to it, but you’re banking on rolling an 8-14 or 16 twice in a row. It’s not awful odds, but unreliable, a lot of SPP and there’s not much in the Secondary box you can use for a pure Thrower should you roll low (you may as well keep the AG or Strength buff and then build a Ball Carrier if you roll a 15).

———————

Python Warrior Throwers are a bit harder to fit into the 2022 Amazon Team, mostly thanks to a lack of Catchers to throw to. That being said, they’re still a good option for a call carrier with their passing to fall back on should things get problematic. 80k isn’t a lot considering the amount of skills they get and you probably won’t regret getting at least one over a regular linewoman. The current edition isn’t super friendly to the passing game with its changes, but it is doable and definitely fun if you make a decent target piece out of a Blitzer or Linewoman too, but plan A it is not!

Vampire Thrower

Probably the closest in terms of the old vanilla Vampire player, is the Vampire Thrower. For 110k, you get the classical statline of Strength 4 and AG2+ along with a very, very nice PA2+ and Pass for good measure. The Vampire Thrower very much does what it says on the...
