TV 1000 Wood Elf Starting Rosters
A lot has changed for the Wood Elves in the new ruleset! Their very expensive players have become even more expensive, their Passing Ability is worse than before, and Leap has been changed to be more difficult to pull off.
That said, they’re still a very strong team, now you just need more of the positional players instead of just using the Linemen for specific tasks. And the Wardancers are still, in my personal opinion, the single best starting player in the game.
So, without further ado, let’s take a look at some rosters you can field with a one million gold treasury:
2 Wardancers | Wood Elf Starting Rosters
Quantity | Player/Item | Cost |
9 | Linemen | 630k |
2 | Wardancers | 250k |
2 | Reroll | 100k |
Total | 980k |
This is very simple and straight-forward. Your Wardancers are your two stars, they’ll do most of the heavy lifting (aka scoring Touchdowns), and the Linemen will provide the support. With this line-up, you will rely on hand-offs to quickly move the ball forward, since both the Linemen and the Wardancers only pass on a roll of 4+. If you want to play a passing game, your next (player) purchase should be a Thrower, your other players still catch the ball on a roll of 2+, so you can pass it around without Catchers.
Treeman | Wood Elf Starting Rosters
Quantity | Player/Item | Cost |
9 | Linemen | 630k |
1 | Wardancer | 125k |
1 | Treeman | 120k |
2 | Reroll | 100k |
Total | 975k |
Exchanging one Wardancer for the Treeman sacrifices some mobility for a lot of extra strength. Be wary though, this is not a Halfling Treeman, which means you can’t assist the roll to stand up. There is no team-mate to throw for the Wood Elves, so that aspect of the Treeman won’t come into play. Since the rest of the team stays the same, everything from the above set-up still stays true, except the first purchase target would be the second Wardancer.
All Positionals | Wood Elf Starting Rosters
Quantity | Player/Item | Cost |
7 | Linemen | 490k |
1 | Thrower | 95k |
2 | Catchers | 180k |
1 | Wardancer | 125k |
2 | Rerolls | 100k |
Total | 990k |
Here you take at least one of each available positional (except the Treeman) to have your full kit available from the start. From this point you can choose your own development path, but my personal recommendation would be to get an Apothecary as quickly as possible, since you now have some very expensive players on the pitch that you probably don’t want to lose!
A slight variation to this lets you field both Wardancers from the start, which would look like this:
Quantity | Player/Item | Cost |
7 | Linemen | 490k |
1 | Thrower | 95k |
1 | Catcher | 90k |
2 | Wardancers | 250k |
1 | Reroll | 50k |
Total | 975k |
0 Reroll | Wood Elf Starting Rosters
Quantity | Player/Item | Cost |
8 | Linemen | 560k |
1 | Thrower | 95k |
1 | Catcher | 90k |
2 | Wardancers | 250k |
Total | 995k |
As Elves never fail a roll, you don’t really need rerolls, do you? The price increases, and the necessity of a thrower if you want to throw the ball make this build slightly different from the old one from Blood Bowl 2016, but still gives you a lot of playing power. Still, with no rerolls at all, you are just one skull away from a turnover, so handle this team with utmost care.
Conclusion:
The biggest change to the classic Wood Elf teams would be the inclusion of the Thrower because they are the only players to have 2+ Passing Ability – in the past, most teams excluded them because the Linemen (or Catchers, or Wardancers) could pass just as well as the Thrower. You’ll probably find coaches that will still exclude them, and work their way down the pitch with just Hand-Offs, but for this guide, I wanted to include some team builds that include the Thrower.
Wood Elves still bring one of the strongest team line-ups to the table, but it will take some time to get all the positionals together instead of starting off with everything you want.
Your 0 reroll roster has 12 players for some reason – if you’re going for the most tooled up team I’d be tempted to take a tree instead of 2 of those line elves, which still gives you 20k spare to drop another line elf and get a second catcher.
One option I didn’t see, which has been my standard starting point in Blood Bowl 2, is 2 wardancers, a catcher, 8 line elves and 2 rerolls. I think with the price increases that’s now exactly 1000k. Though maybe the changes to passing necessitate squeezing a thrower in somehow.
My favorite line up as Woodies has always been and still is a massive front loading roster with all position players and only three linemen and of course 0 RRs. With this new edition this isn’t possible any more, so I would go for two wardancers, four catchers, one thrower and four linemen.
The wardancers are great blitzers so you should always have two. The catchers are great not only for scoring, but also for binding up opponents on defense, they are just one skill away from the all important block skill so that after three to four games you should have 6 blodgers in your team. A thrower is always nice, in this new version I wouldn’t throw a single ball without one.
What are you up for in the future with this build? Apo after your first game! You’ve got to many positionals to go without one. First RR after your third game, after that you just replace killed players, get a treeman, more RRs and simply skill up your team!
